I have been increasingly frustrated over the last ten years with the way Labour supporters proclaim the success of the minimum wage policy, the low unemployment of the last ten years being seen as proof that such laws do not create unemployment.

To my mind what was missing from such an analysis was an acceptance that we were knee deep in a credit boom for much of the time. This inturn offset the potentially harmful effects of the min wage law.

The true test of such a law's "success" wil be the extent to which it hampers the country's economic growth during a recession. Me thinks it will just hold us back.

Mention any of this to a trot and you just get larfed at ofcourse ...not an economisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08679610738502901666noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19769829.post-35306315817856198502009-01-15T14:04:00.000+00:002009-01-15T14:04:00.000+00:00This is, of course, the problem with democracy. If you haven't read it, David, I really must insist that you read:

Democracy: The God That Failed

I would lend you mine, but as it contains a personal and genuine signature from Der HoppeMeister himself, obtained on a cool Oxfordshire evening, I'm afraid it's under armed guard in my vault.

Yes, and it's a terrible shame about John Redwood being so statist. I had hoped he would prove to be the next Keith Joseph, but his hair and his thinking just aren't frizzy enough.

And Redwood is considered too extreme for the Tories!

Heaven knows what they would think of me if I joined their rotten party again.Jack Maturinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00903651577858853608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19769829.post-39400507433337026372009-01-15T10:16:00.000+00:002009-01-15T10:16:00.000+00:00When you pause to think about it, if you were part...When you pause to think about it, if you were part of a government that had monumentally screwed up and now you have absolutely no idea how to get out of it, would you be telling or would you look around for someone to blame?

Would you undersake difficult Mises solutions so near to an election or might you have a go at some Keynesian electoral friendly witchcraft.

And, if you were the opposition, would you be announcing the sorts of things you knew you would have to do when finally in governent, like increasing interest rates to let the bottom fall out of the housing market quickly and firing hoards of civil servants?

That then is why we will hear loads of nonsensical initiatives from the government and very little or nothing from the opposition.

Sorry to bore you with all this but after a couple of feeble responses from the Redwood link, the penny just dropped.Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02787564901034757893noreply@blogger.com
